How to Store Summer Toys for Winter

Say goodbye to summer and make sure your boat, motorcycle, and RV are safely stored for winter.

When you start to feel a chill in the air, you know that summer is finally at its end.  The end of summer means that it’s time to prepare summer toys like boats, motorcycles, RVs, ATVs, and so on, for storage.  Don’t let winter catch you off guard; get ready today!  Here’s what you need to know about preparing your summer toys for storage.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Before you put your summer toys into storage, it’s important that they are clean and in good condition.  The first step in your storage preparations is thoroughly cleaning the interior and exterior of your vehicles.  Applying wax to the outside of your vehicles will help prevent rusting, and a cover can provide additional protection.  While you’re cleaning your boat or RV, make sure there isn’t any water in the engine or plumbing systems.  This residual moisture can cause damage during their time away in storage.

If there is leftover fuel in any of your vehicles’ engines, then make sure you add some fuel stabilizer to the gas tank.  Without it, the remaining gas could negatively affect your vehicles’ motors.

Before storing your vehicles, you should also make sure they are in good condition.  Check tires for small leaks and make any other necessary repairs.  You want your toys to be ready to use as soon as summer returns next year.

Storage

If you cannot or choose not to store your vehicles on your property, then there are a few things to keep in mind when choosing a storage facility.  Start by asking if the storage facility has experience storing similar vehicles.  It’s also a good idea to inspect the storage space for yourself.  A good facility unit will have proper security and offer dry and heated units.  Make sure the storage facility you’re interested in has monthly rental fees.  You’re only storing your toys for the winter, so don’t pay for additional storage time.

Even though your toys will be stored for the winter, it’s still important that they have year-round insurance coverage.  Your vehicles could be stolen or damaged during storage, so it’s best to have the protection you need.  To get your summer toys insured, contact the friendly team at Patterson & Associates Insurance.  We are ready to get you covered today!
