The Best Car for Your Teen Driver

Is your teen ready for his or her own car?  Make sure you are choosing the right one for them.

If you are planning on surprising your teen with a new car this holiday season, then it’s important that you choose the right car to fit their needs.  As you shop around this holiday season, here are some things to keep in mind.

New vs. Used

One of the first decisions you should make is whether to get your teen a new or used car.  A new car will provide the most updated security features and will be more reliable than a used car.  However, a brand-new car will also be more expensive.  Used cars are a more affordable option for your teen and many newer used cars have safety features comparable to brand-new cars.  However, while cheaper at the outset, used cars tend to require more maintenance and repairs and these costs can add up.

Another thing to take into consideration is the size of the car.  Larger, heavier cars are sturdier and tend to hold up better during a collision.  However, bigger cars don’t get very good gas mileage and can be difficult for inexperienced drivers to handle.  Smaller cars are a lot easier to drive and have better fuel economy, but they do not provide as much protection in an accident.

While your teen may dream of owning a sports car, fast cars aren’t the safest option.  Cars that drive too fast or accelerate very quickly can be hard to handle and can increase your teen’s chances of getting into an accident.

Certain car colors are more visible than others.  For instance, black or dark colored cars are notoriously hard to see at night, and silver or grey cars can be difficult to see in overcast conditions.  White cars and brightly colored cars (yellow, red, etc.) are the most visible to other drivers and can help reduce your teen’s chances of getting into a collision.
